Sexual Abuse by Catholic Priests
Sex abuse and the Catholic Church
During the 1960s, and the following years, a: 'Sexual Revolution' occurred within the Western World. The Church
was not unaffected by the event with many priests leaving their ministry to marry (some with and some without Church
permission). These years co-insided with the turmoil within the Church while she was implementing large changes
following the Vatican II Council.
By the turn of the century, cases had come to light of individuals in the 1970s and 80s misusing
their positions of trust to hide their secret sinful abuse of children. This led to questions regarding how individual
bishops had tried to deal with this problem.
As a history site, we consider that these on-going contemporary revelations are too recent to be assessed in a
balanced way. It could be another decade or more before a factual and balanced picture of what occurred is available.
In the meantime we plan to provide links below to articles which may be of use to those gathering
insights into varying aspects of the history of this problem.
