SHORT  SAYINGS  WORTH  REMEMBERING

1. The victors write the history books.

Note: Generally true within the country involved. But defeated exiles, when living in a friendly country, may be more successful in promoting another history.

2. “Who controls the past”,

  ran the party slogan,

“controls the future”;

“Who controls the present, controls the past”

       (George Orwell: ‘1984’, chapter 3)

3. History does not repeat itself, but historians often do.

4. Create a myth and your thought will live forever.

Or;  A myth takes longer to bury than its composer.

5. Truth is the daughter of time.

A more optimistic proverb than 4 above.

6. There is nothing so sad as a theory being destroyed by one awkward fact.

7. People fear testing with common sense as it may prevent them keeping up with the latest theory.

8. Some historians are educated beyond their intelligence.

9. We have sunk to such a depth that the restatement of the obvious has become the first duty of intellegent men. (George Orwell)

The above are humorous, cynical, hopeful and depressing. But all have some truth in them.
